Our Hearthstone Adventure Begins
We have recently recruited a talented player progressing to the top of the Hearthstone scene, Toastmonster. We interviewed him on his entrance to the organisation.
“Hey, my name is Kieran Kane and my alias is Toastmonster. There isn't a great story behind my name, it was just a character name I had for WoW back in the day and I've just stuck with it.”
What games do you enjoy playing? Do you have any hobbies outside of gaming?
“So for the last year i've been really into Hearthstone, but previously I played WoW at a highish level, played league to mid diamond, and have dabbled with the odd game here and there. Recently I started playing PUBG and that's a ton of fun! Gaming is my main hobby, outside of the usual socialising type things.”
What made you chose Digital Warfare and what do you hope to achieve whilst you are with us?
“I love the community you guys are working to create, and thought it seemed like a really refreshing approach to the esports scene. I'm hoping to help develop this community (and maybe get a few of you into Hearthstone!) while I'm here, as well as do my best and have some high tournament finishes (as everyone always is!).”
You recently achieved a place in the ESL premier league for Hearthstone. How did you find the journey reaching this amazing goal?
“So when I first started playing Hearthstone I actually entered the qualifiers for the Prem then, but I wasn't particularly good at the game. I missed out narrowly on top 8 a couple of times. This time however I put a lot more work into it. I had a pretty poor read on the meta for the first qualifier, as there had just been a balance patch literally 24 hours before. However I put a lot of time in before the next qualifier and was really pleased to have a much tighter lineup with more refined lists, leading to me going 4-1 in the Swiss and then progressing from the lower bracket in the top 8.”
How have your recent games in the ESL prem worked out so far? Any highs or lows? Any lessons learnt?
“My first series I felt I played fairly well as I was relatively comfortable with the decks, however the second that I played on stream vs Lemon led to a couple of matchups I just wasn't comfortable enough with. I had been quite fortunate as I had been soft-targetting the rogue and shaman that Lemon did end up bringing, and was able to force two wins against the rogue and one against shaman to take the series 3-2. I definitely have a lot of room for improvement here, though, and am actively working on this now.”
What do you think of the organisation since you joined and have you been involved in any community aspects?
“Everyone seems incredibly friendly and wanting to help, which is a fantastic welcome! I haven't been involved in any community aspects yet, but I'm sure I will soon.”
